Apex Legend - A new beginning for Titanfall?

This is not a demonstration of skills with me landing 25 kills in a single game. Not gonna happen today. it is more a review of the elements that are making this game really great and for the potential justice that it could make for an excellent but severely underestimated title : Titanfall.

Starting with APEX

Apex Legend is taking the FPS and Battle Royale universe like a storm in less than a month:

  • 1 000 000 players in the first 8 hours

  • 25 000 000 active players

  • A tournament organized on it a week after release

The game has mechanics and weapons that are coming directly from the Titanfall universe and somehow the same ingredients are successful in the saturated realm of Battle Royale dominated by Fortnite and PUBG with COD and others fighting back. Try to understand...

Apex doesn't re-invent the genre but makes a mix and match of different features into a unique cocktail generating a great game play and also the fun to play it no matter if you are landing 25 kills a match or not a single one. To testify, I am more towards the second scenario and I am still motivated to get a beating :)

The cocktail recipe :

1- The fast pace of the Game - Running , the sliding, the zip lines everything encourages you to move fast.

2- Characters (The Legends)

Each Legend has unique with abilities and style (Outfit, voice, small talk, etc...) that is calling for a story mode to know more about each one of them. They all have same general characteristics - Speed, health, jump height. - only difference are abilities you will choose based on your play style. In my case so far it is to compensate my weaknesses :

Bad Sense of Orientation - Blood Hound and capacity to track and detect enemies

Hard to handle Multiple gun fight opponents- Gibraltar and his shield and Bombardment.

Using more the second than the first these days :)

3- The automated communication and alert system

You can with a click/ "Ping" everything and based on what you ping it will that manages request such as :

  • I need/there is a weapon, armor,

  • Let's go this way,

  • Enemy location,

  • etc...

In addition to that, each character will comment on the situation:

  • I am taking fire

  • Killed an enemy

  • A new kill leader

  • Number of teams still in the game

  • ...

Something between collaboration, communication and fun that motivates you to stay in the game as much as possible:

4 - Recovery and reviving.

if you are knocked down, you can be saved on the spot by a team mate performing first aid, if first aid time is exceeded you can still be revived if your banner is taken to a respawn point.

6- The team play

The previous features and the fact that you play in a team of 3. Relying on others for information, moving around, surviving a gun fight and reviving each other. Really make the game engaging.

Moving to TitanFall

TitanFall started as an Xbox exclusive. I was attracted by the "Won over 60 Awards" on the jacket. Main problem raised : no story mode.

TitanFall 2 was released in 2018 in October, 28th with a story mode and a lot of improvement but still not successful.

This time very brilliant idea from EA : release it during the same month as COD Black Ops 4 (Oct 12th) and not far from another EA game: Battlfield V (November 9th).

Basically between people that perceived it was an Xbox exclusive, the ones who already bought COD and the ones waiting for Battlefield.

As Apex is for Free, people are now capable to see the mechanics, get back to their origin and get more curious about TitanFall. It will make people more receptive to the next game. If Titanfall 3 takes the opportunity to mix and match Apex characters with a good storyline it could be really great.

Somehow curiosity has been triggered : In this post from PCgamer, the servers of TF2 got an increase of participation after Apex release. Hopefully this is just the beginning.

The future will tell.

For Now let's play to the Legends and wait for the Titan...Fall.
